The best MTL reader app for Chinese web novels.
FanMTL, SonicMTL, WTR-Lab. The catalog is enormous. The reading experience is brutal. Here's how to fix the second part.
MTL — machine-translated — Chinese web novels are how most English readers get past the human-translation bottleneck. The catalogs are huge: FanMTL alone hosts 20,000+ novels, SonicMTL another 10,000, WTR-Lab another 15,000. The trade is quality. MTL prose is rough, sometimes incoherent, often funny in ways the author didn't intend. But you get to read the next 700 chapters of the cultivation novel you love, without waiting two years for a human translation.
The hard part isn't finding the novels. It's reading them on a phone without bouncing through a wall of ads, broken pagination, and "Tap here to continue" interstitials. This guide is about that.
The MTL site landscape
Three sites cover most of what English MTL readers need:
- FanMTL — the largest pure-MTL Chinese novel catalog in English. ~20,000 novels. Quality varies by source, but coverage is unmatched. Cultivation, urban-fantasy, and reincarnation novels live here.
- SonicMTL — high-volume MTL site, heavy ad density on the source itself, but useful for rare cultivation and immortality novels you can't find elsewhere.
- WTR-Lab — multilingual MTL platform that translates Chinese sources into many target languages from one dashboard. Useful for non-English readers, or anyone who wants to compare translation quality across languages.
Adjacent sites — NovelFull, NovelHi, NovelBuddy, AllNovel, etc. — carry partly-MTL, partly-human-translated catalogs. They're worth a look, but the pure-MTL volume lives on FanMTL and SonicMTL.
The reading problem
Each of these sites is an aggregator with a business model: serve ads against your scrolling. The reading UI reflects it. Three issues compound:
- Pagination is split into "click for next" pages — sometimes mid-chapter — which destroys flow. The "next chapter" button is occasionally a disguised ad.
- Mobile typography is whatever the host serves. No serif, no AMOLED black, no real margin control. Reading 200,000 words at the wrong line-height is exhausting.
- Offline is a fantasy. Browser cache fills, evicts, fails on reload. There's no "download for the flight" option that survives airplane mode.
What you actually want
- Real offline downloads. Chapters land on the device. The reader never makes a network call. More on what "real download" means.
- Single reading surface. One reader, three sites: FanMTL today, SonicMTL tomorrow, WTR-Lab the day after. Same typography, same TTS settings.
- TTS. MTL chapters are long. Listening is how you finish a 1,500-chapter cultivation novel. More on TTS for long novels.
- Glossary continuity. Names, sect terms, technique names — the MTL renders them inconsistently. A reader that lets you note them helps. (Arc Reader has bookmarks; a name-glossary feature is on the roadmap.)
How Arc Reader handles MTL sources
Arc Reader treats FanMTL, SonicMTL, and WTR-Lab as first-class sources. Paste a novel URL from any of the three. The app pulls the title, author, cover, full chapter list. Queue downloads land on the device, ad-free, paginated as one continuous reader.
Same TTS engine for all three sites. Same typography settings. Same theme switcher. The aggregator chrome disappears once the chapter is downloaded.
How to add an MTL novel
- Install Arc Reader. Open. Tap "Start as guest".
- Find a novel on
fanmtl.com,sonicmtl.com, orwtr-lab.com. Copy the novel URL. - Paste into Arc Reader's add sheet. The app resolves the chapter list.
- Pick a download range. Hit download.
- Read offline. Use TTS if you'd rather listen.
FAQ
Will the translation get better in Arc Reader?
The translation quality is whatever the MTL site itself produces — Arc Reader doesn't re-translate. What changes is the reading environment: typography, offline access, TTS, theme.
Can I switch between MTL and human translations?
Yes. If a novel exists on a human-translation site like Light Novel Pub or Creative Novels, you can add that as a separate library entry. Full source list.
Is reading MTL novels legal?
The MTL aggregators sit in a gray zone — most source content is licensed in mainland China but redistributed without authorization in English. Arc Reader doesn't host content, scrape paywalls, or store anything — it's a reader for sites you're already reading on.
