WTR-Lab alternatives — and how to never need one.

When WTR-Lab is down, slow, or doesn't have the novel, these are the sites to read from instead. And the way to stop caring which site is up today.

The Arc Reader team · · 6 min read

WTR-Lab is a machine-translation site for Chinese, Korean and Japanese web novels — a huge catalog, translated into English and a long list of other languages from one place. It's popular for good reason. Among people who read with Arc Reader, it is the most-read site of all. So when it's down, slow, or missing the one novel you want, the question comes fast: where else?

The short answer: other MTL catalogs like FanMTL, SonicMTL and MTL Novel; translated aggregators like Novel Fire and Light Novel Pub; human-translation hosts for the novels that have them; and the original Chinese, Japanese or Korean-platform sites, translated with your own AI key. The longer answer — and the one that actually ends the search — is to put the novel on a shelf that can read from all of them, and download it.

Why people look for a WTR-Lab alternative

Not because WTR-Lab is bad. Usually it's one of five ordinary things:

  • The site is down or slow. Every big reading site has bad days — traffic spikes, maintenance, hosting trouble. Mid-arc is the worst time to find out.
  • The novel isn't there, or it's behind — another site has the chapters it's missing.
  • Ads. Reading on a phone browser means reading around whatever the page serves.
  • No offline, no audio. A browser tab doesn't survive a flight, and it won't read a 2,000-chapter cultivation novel aloud on your commute.
  • You want a translation you control. MTL is rough by nature. Some readers would rather translate the raw themselves, with a model they choose and names that stay consistent.

Each of those has a different fix. The sections below sort the alternatives by which one they solve.

Sites like WTR-Lab: other MTL catalogs

If you like WTR-Lab for its volume — the novels no human team will ever get to — these are the closest matches. Same trade-off: huge coverage, rough prose.

  • FanMTL — one of the largest English MTL catalogs of Chinese novels. Cultivation, urban fantasy, reincarnation. More on FanMTL alternatives.
  • SonicMTL — another big MTL shelf, heavy on xianxia and cultivation.
  • MTL Novel — MTL of Chinese web novels, with a lot of overlap with the two above.
  • NovelHall — a mixed English catalog with a lot of MTL Chinese fiction in it.
  • LNMTL — the long-running veteran. Smaller, but it still carries older cultivation series the newer sites skipped.

The big difference from WTR-Lab: these are English-only. WTR-Lab's many target languages are its own thing — if you read MTL in Spanish, Indonesian or Portuguese, the better alternative is usually the raw plus your own translation (below).

Translated aggregators that carry the same novels

The popular titles — the ones with fan or official English translations — tend to show up on several aggregator sites at once. Quality is usually better than MTL; selection is narrower.

  • Novel Fire — a broad English catalog of translated Chinese, Korean and Japanese web novels.
  • Light Novel Pub — translated light novels and web novels, a familiar fallback for the big titles.
  • NovelBuddy — fantasy, xianxia and romance, with plenty of overlap.
  • FreeWebNovel and LibRead — sister-style catalogs that often have the same novel at a similar chapter.
  • Novel-Bin — a big shelf in the NovelFull orbit. More on NovelBin alternatives and the NovelFull cluster.

Human-translation hosts

If a novel has a human translation, it's often worth switching for. Translator groups host their own work, and Novel Updates indexes who is translating what. Sites like Chrysanthemum Garden (danmei and romance), Light Novel Translations (Japanese, Korean and Chinese), Creative Novels and Divine Dao Library (cultivation) are good places to look. Many translators fund their work with early-access chapters; those stay gated, and paying for them is how the next chapter gets made.

The originals: read the raw, translate it yourself

Most of what WTR-Lab translates starts on a handful of original platforms. Go to the source and you get the newest chapter first — the trade is that it's in the original language.

  • 起点中文网 (Qidian) — the giant of Chinese web fiction: xuanhuan, xianxia, urban.
  • 番茄小说 (Fanqie) — a huge Chinese catalog, a lot of it free to read.
  • 小説家になろう (Syosetu) and カクヨム (Kakuyomu) — where Japanese isekai and fantasy web novels are first posted.
  • Novelpia Global — the English edition of the Korean platform, for Korean-origin web novels.

Read a raw with your own AI key — Gemini, OpenAI, DeepSeek, OpenRouter, Groq or any OpenAI-compatible service — and you choose the model and fix the names once. Paid and locked chapters on these platforms stay locked; a reader doesn't change that, and shouldn't. More on translating raws.

Is there a WTR-Lab app? A reader for all of them

There's a better question than "which site is up?" — why does it matter which site is up? If the novel is already on your phone, an outage is somebody else's problem.

Arc Reader — which we make — reads WTR-Lab itself, and every alternative above, into one shelf:

  1. Paste the novel's page link, search across sources, or share it from Safari or Chrome. Every chapter downloads in the background, Wi-Fi only by default.
  2. When WTR-Lab is down or behind, Arc Reader can pick up the same novel from another site that's further ahead.
  3. New chapters are detected, you get a notification, and they can download themselves.
  4. Listen offline. 140 natural voices in 31 languages run on the phone — no internet, no per-minute cost. Pronunciation rules fix a sect name once for the whole novel. More on listening.
  5. Translate raws with your own key. Ahead-of-you or whole-novel translation, consistent names, an optional bilingual layout, saved with the chapter.

FAQ

Is WTR-Lab down right now?

We can't tell you live — we don't run WTR-Lab and don't monitor it. If it won't load, try again later, check the site's own community channels, or keep reading the same novel from another site. If it's already downloaded in a reader app, it opens without the site at all.

How do I keep reading when WTR-Lab is down?

Find the same novel on another site — FanMTL, SonicMTL or MTL Novel for MTL; Novel Fire or Light Novel Pub for translated titles. In Arc Reader, the chapters you've downloaded keep working offline, and the app can switch the novel to another site that's further ahead.

Is there a WTR-Lab app?

Not one we make for them. Arc Reader isn't affiliated with WTR-Lab — it's a reader app that imports WTR-Lab novels, along with hundreds of other sites, into one offline library on iPhone and Android.

Can I read WTR-Lab offline?

Yes. Paste a WTR-Lab novel's page link into Arc Reader and every chapter downloads to your phone. They open with no connection, and the on-device voices can read them aloud. More on reading offline.

Is it free?

Arc Reader is free to download and read with — the free app has a few ads while you read. Pro removes the ads and adds every neural voice, sync and cloud backup. Translation uses your own AI key, so its cost is whatever your provider charges.
